HOUSTON, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Five officers in U.S. Texas city of Houston were wounded in a shooting Monday evening in a southeastern residential area with two of them in critical conditions, police said.
Art Acevedo, chief of the Houston Police Department (HPD) said in a press briefing that five officers were injured, 4 of them with bullet wounds, the fifth officer, the only one not shot, suffered a knee injury.
"The two officers who are critical were both shot in the neck area and they are under surgery in a local hospital," the police chief said.
According to Acevedo, the officers were trying to serve a search warrant, and "when they breached the door, the officers were shot at."
He added that the warrant was related to a drug investigation. "They had reports heroin was being sold at that residence," he said.
He confirmed that two suspects were dead, and the scene has been cleared and safe.
"I want to be very clear that we do not tolerate any sort of activity whether it's drug activity, whether it's drug trafficking, that we'll work night and day to make sure that our city remain safe," Sylvester Turner, mayor of Houston, said in the press briefing.
Earlier, Governor of Texas Greg Abbott said in a statement that the horrific attack on police officers "is a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe."
