COLOMBO, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday issued a special gazette notification to convene Parliament next Wednesday, as the political crisis in the island country deepened.
The president's office said the Gazette notice was issued on Sunday evening, with Sirisena saying Parliament would convene next Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time.
On Oct. 27, Sirisena prorogued Parliament till Nov. 16, hours after he dissolved his cabinet and sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, replacing him with former President Mahinda Rajapakse.
Wickremesinghe has called his sudden dismissal illegal and has called for Parliament to convene immediately to prove his majority in the 225-member House.
