In response to the Greek debt crisis, the EU set up a task force led by Van Rompuy to examine possible options on economic reforms in the 27-nation bloc.

At the first meeting of the task force, which is composed of EU finance ministers and experts, it was agreed that the EU should strengthen budgetary surveillance and macro-economic surveillance as well as set up a permanent crisis resolution mechanism and improve economic governance in the euro zone.

Van Rompuy said he would present the agreed proposals to the EU leaders at their meeting later this month and the task force would continue to work on the other two issues.
