MALE, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, won the parliamentary elections held on Saturday, local media reported on Monday, quoting the provincial results released by the elections commission.
According to the provincial results released on Sunday and Monday, the MDP won a two-third majority at the parliament, securing 65 of the 87 seats.
The Jumhooree Party secured five seats and the Progressive Party of Maldives and People's National Congress together had seven seats. Independent candidates won seven seats while the Maldives Development Alliance won two.
In a statement, the president congratulated all winners, especially in the MDP which he said had secured a huge majority at the parliament.
The elections commission said it hopes to announce official results by April 12.
