NEW YORK, May 10 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolted South Sandwich Islands region at 23:23:41 GMT on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 71.0 km, was initially determined to be at 56.542 degrees south latitude and 25.853 degrees west longitude.
