SANTIAGO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chilean President Sebastian Pinera on Friday reshuffled his cabinet, replacing ministers of defense, labor and energy, and sacking the minister of transportation.
The move followed Defense Minister Jaime Ravinet's resignation on Thursday after his controversial remarks. He will be replaced by Senator Andres Allamand.
Ravinet had said that if pressed to reveal details of military purchases, the Chilean military could be reluctant to help in future national diasters.
Minister of Mining Laurence Golborne will concurrently hold the portfolio of minister of energy, according to government spokeswoman Ena von Baer.
Golborne replaces Ricardo Ranieri, who resigned amid strong protests against the gas price rises in the southernmost Magellan region.
Meanwhile, Senator Evelyn Matthei is the new labor minister. Minister of Transportation Felipe Morande was sacked, but his replacement has yet to be decided.
