LAUSANNE, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the Olympic Cup 2019 to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, on Friday.
Fillippo Grandi, UN's High Commissioner for Refugees, accepted the Olympic Cup as UNHCR's representative.
"This award is a tribute I want to share with all my colleagues, and it's also a tribute for displaced people and communities that UNHCR serves," said by Grandi.
Created by Pierre de Coubertin in 1906, the Olympic Cup is awarded by IOC annually to an institution or association in recognition of its work to actively develop the Olympic Movement.
In the ceremony, the IOC President, Thomas Bach praised UNHCR as a long-standing UN partner of the IOC and Olympic Movement.
"UNHCR shares our belief in sport as a force for good in the world," said Bach.
Bach also highlighted UNHCR's work on creating the IOC Refugee Olympic Team.
