JAKARTA, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian athletes have pledged to break world records and eye at least 31 gold medals during the upcoming 2020 ASEAN Para Games in the Philippines next month, a coach said on Friday.
"In addition to achieving the gold medal target, hopefully, the athletes will also break world records," said Slamet Widodo, chief coach for athletics at the National Paralympic Committee.
A total of 55 Indonesian athletes will compete in athletics during the 10th ASEAN Para Games scheduled to be played from January 14 to 25 in the Philippines, the coach said at the state Solo University in Indonesia's province of Central Java.
Indonesia will send 30 percent young athletes and the rest will be seniors.
The coach was confident that the target would be exceeded.
Meanwhile, Andi Herman, head of the Indonesian contingent to the regional sports event, said the Indonesian squad has undergone exercises at a training camp in the province's town of Solo.
Athletics is expected to significantly contribute gold medals to the Indonesian contingent, which has set a 100-gold target during the regional multi-sport event, according to Herman.
Indonesia will send a total of 300 athletes to the regional multi-sports event and take part in all the 16 sports branches to be staged, he said.
The ASEAN Para Games is a biannual sports event held after every Southeast Asian Games involving athletes from 11 Southeast Asian countries.
