THE HAGUE, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Former Dutch professional soccer player Kelvin Maynard was killed in a shooting in the southeast part of Amsterdam on Wednesday night, police confirmed on Thursday.
At around 8:30 p.m. local time, several shots were fired on Maynard's car, which bumped into a fire brigade station. Two suspects escaped on a scooter. The victim died of his injuries just after the shooting.
Maynard had a record at the police, but it is unclear for what kind of crimes. Local media reported that the shooting could be drug-related.
The 32-year-old Maynard started his professional soccer career at FC Volendam in 2006 and collected experiences abroad at SC Olhanense in Portugal and Kecskemeti TE in Hungary. He returned to the Netherlands at FC Emmen and continued at Antwerp FC in Belgium and Burton Albion in England. Since 2017 he joined Dutch amateur clubs Spakenburg, Quick Boys and until this season Alphense Boys.
