RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian giants Flamengo sacked coach Mauricio Barbieri on Friday, barely a day after the team's elimination from the Copa do Brasil.
Barbieri led the team to 19 wins, 12 draws and eight defeats after replacing Paulo Cesar Carpegiani in March, having joined the club as an assistant three months earlier.
"Flamengo thank [Barbieri] for his professionalism over the last night months," the club said in a brief statement.
The announcement means Flamengo are now searching for their 14th coach since 2013.
The Rio de Janeiro side were dumped out of the Copa do Brasil when they lost 2-1 to Corinthians in their semifinal second leg in Sao Paulo on Wednesday night. The teams drew 0-0 in the first leg earlier this month.
Flamengo are currently fourth in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings, three points behind leaders Sao Paulo with 12 games remaining. Enditem
