BALATONFURED, Hungary, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Defending champion French swimmer Aurelie Muller won the women's 10km open water event with a time of two hours and 13.70 seconds at the 17th FINA World Championships on Sunday in Balatonfured, western Hungary.
Samantha Arevalo of Ecuador claimed the silver medal with a time of two hours and 17.20 seconds. Arianna Bridi of Italy and Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil shared the bronze medal.
Rachele Brundi of Italy was fifth and Haley Anderson of USA was sixth. Finnia Wunram of Germany and Anna Olasz of Hungary placed seventh and eighth respectively.
Dutch swimmer and the Olympic gold medalist in the 10km open water marathon at the 2016 Olympics Sharon van Rouwendaal finished in 16th place.
Two Chinese swimmers attended the event. Yan Siyu placed 12th, while Xin Xin placed 17th.
The 17th FINA World Championships run from July 14 to 30, with the open water discipline staged in Balatonfured 130km southwest to Budapest.
