MADRID, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Liga Santander club Las Palmas on Monday named Manolo Marquez as their new first team coach.
Marquez replaced Quique Setien, who abandoned the club at the end of last season to take over at Betis.
Although Marquez's naming comes as a slight surprise given his lack of top-flight experience, he has been given the first team position after a spectacular campaign with the Las Palmas B team, who he led to promotion from the Spanish Third Division to the Segunda B (third tier of Spanish football) in the recently finished season.
The Las Palmas website highlights that Marquez's grandfather was the President of Real Club Victoria, which is one of the five clubs which joined together to form the current side and he had previously commented that coaching Las Palmas was his "dream".
