BUDAPEST, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hungary held Romania to a 0-0 draw in the 2016 European Championship qualifiers on Friday night after police used tear gas and night sticks to subdue hundreds of rock, beer bottle, and smoke-bomb throwing fans dressed in black outside the Budapest stadium.
Police said three officers had been injured in the conflict after fans had called for a "demonstration" to protest the Hungarian Football Federation's ticket distribution system.
Police detained 13 demonstrators and with mounted police and water cannon reinforcements, put an end to the disturbance. One fan was injured and required medical attention.
In the stands, meanwhile, two opposing groups of Romanian fans began fighting against one another. Police packed the sector and separated the fans.
The Hungarian side has not won a game against Romania in 34 years. It will play against the Northern Irish team, which leads the group, in Belfast on Monday.
