VANCOUVER, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland trounced Ecuador 10-1 here on Friday for its first victory in Group C of the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Following their 6-0 defeat to Cameroon, the South American newcomers were thrashed again while the Swiss bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Japan in the first round to keep alive its hope of qualifying for the knockout stage.
Despite the huge gap in scoreline, Ecuador put up some real resistance in the first half. After an Angie Ponce own goal handed Switzerland a 1-0 lead, Eseosa Aigbogun scored just before the break to make it 2-0.
The second half was dominated by Switzerland as Fabienne Humm and Ramona Bachman both completed hat-tricks and Martina Moser also got on the scoreboard.
Ecuador's Angie Ponce had a hat-trick, too, at the BC Place Stadium, but two of the goals were own goals for the opposition.
Nevertheless, the 18-year-old defender hit her country's first World Cup goal when she converted a 64th-minute penalty.
