RIO DE JANEIRO, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Marcio Araujo struck an injury-time equalizer against Vasco da Gama to hand Flamengo victory in the Rio de Janeiro state championship final on Sunday.
The 29-year-old headed in from a set piece in the 91st minute at the Maracana stadium to level the scores 1-1 and give Flamengo their 33rd title.
Vasco playmaker Douglas had given his team the lead in the 76th minute by converting from the penalty spot.
The result followed a 1-1 draw in last week's first leg and was enough to hand the Rubrinegro victory due to their superior league record.
"It's an unbelievable feeling," Araujo said after the match. "These things only happen to a team like Flamengo. Their (Vasco) fans were already celebrating but I found a way to give us the title."
Sunday's result goes someway to atoning for Flamengo's exit from the Copa Libertadores last Wednesday following a 3-2 loss to Mexico's Leon.
