VANCOUVER, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Heidi Ferber, a former hockey coach in Kamloops, B.C. in west Canada, was sentenced to a year in jail on Wednesday after pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor and admitting to an affair in 2010 with a 15-year-old player.

Ferber, 39, was charged with sexual relationship with 15-year-old Chanell Petrie in 2010 when Petrie was a hockey player under Ferber's coach.

The young hockey player eventually told a counselor and her parents about what was happening. Earlier this year, Ferber pleaded guilty.

Petrie, who still plays hockey with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Trojans women's team, said she wanted the publication ban on her name to be lifted because she wanted other young people who had faced abuse to know that it's OK to speak out.

The Canadian law provides for an automatic ban on the publication of names in sex cases, to protect the identities of the victims.
