LONDON, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Debutant Andros Townsend scored a spectacular goal to lead England to a 4-1 victory over Montenegro in their World Cup Group H qualifier here on Friday.
The Three Lions still stay atop of the group with 19 points before their last match against Poland next Tuesday at Wembley. Ukraine are second with 18 and Montenegro third with 15. Poland have been eliminated after losing to Ukraine in the day's another match.
Enduring a frustrating first half in which they created little, England went ahead three minutes into the second when Wayne Rooney blast home from close range after a Danny Welbeck shot was parried into his path.
Their lead was doubled on the 60th minute thanks to an own goal from Branko Boskovic. Dejan Damjanovic made it 2-1 to put the visitors back into the battle.
Townsend stroke from 25 meters on the 78th minute with a spectacular swerving effort, which hit the post and bounced into the goal. It was the first goal in the international debut for the Tottenham midfielder.
Daniel Sturridge added the fourth goal in the stoppage time from the penalty spot after being felled inside the box by Ivan Kecojevic.
