THE HAGUE, the Netherlands, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Ranomi Kromowidjojo set a new world record on the 50 meter freestyle in short course during the first day of World Cup swimming races in Eindhoven on Wednesday.
Kromowidjojo clocked 23.24 seconds to break the record of her Dutch compatriot Marleen Veldhuis (23.25, 2008). She now holds her first individual world record.
Last Sunday the 22-year-old Dutch swimmer won the 50m freestyle at the World Swimming Championships at Barcelona, Spain. She also won gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics.
Also in Eindhoven, South African swimmer Chad Le Clos set a short course world record on the 200 meter butterfly. With a time of 1:49.04 he was faster than the former record of Brazilian Kaio Almeida (1:49.11, 2009).
The Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu broke the world record on the 200m individual medley for women. She clocked 2:04.39 in the series and 2:03.20 in the final to beat the previous record held by Julia Smit (2:40.60, 2009) twice on one day.
