MILAN, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Livorno were promoted to the Italian Serie A after holding off local rivals Empoli 2-1 on aggregate in the play-offs.

Livorno beat Empoli 1-0 in the second leg of their play-off at home on Sunday, after the first leg ended 1-1 at Empoli.

Paulinho scored the crucial goal on 32 minutes when he burst between the two centre-backs to get his head on to a Pasquale Schiattarella cross from the right.

The Amaranto return to the top flight for the first time since 2010, joining Sassuolo and Hellas Verona next season.
