Despite the 2-0 loss Monchengladbach has the chance to clinch a European spot as they are in touching distance to the top six. Stuttgart however increased their point gap to the relegation playoff spot to nine points.
From the kickoff Stuttgart took over to reward themselves as Monchengladbach's Alvaro Dominguez deflected a free kick by Alexandru Maxim into his own goal to break the deadlock with 28 minutes played.
The Swabians doubled the lead six minutes later when Christian Genter capitalized on a black out by Monchengladbach's defence to lob home from a tight angle.
The "Foals" were unable to respond whilst Stuttgart focused on counter attacks but yet Vedad Ibisevic, Ibrahima Traore and Martin Harnik failed to add the third to their lead.
At the other encounter on Sunday relegation threatened Augsburg sealed a much-needed 2-0 win over Frankfurt to reduce their gap to safety whereas Frankfurt suffered a setback in their hunt of a berth in Europe.
Augsburg's South Korean international Dong Won Ji was the man of the match as he donated one goal at each half to secure the 2-0 victory over Frankfurt. Augsburg even wasted a penalty at the 32nd minute through Jan Ingwer Callsen Bracker.
