ABU DHABI, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- German football coach Felix Magath, who won twice the double with Bayern Munich, is poised to become manager of the United Arab Emirate's (UAE) national league champions Al Jazira, Dubai-daily Gulf News reported Tuesday.
According to the report, Magath arrived in Abu Dhabi Tuesday and will meet Al Jazira officials Wednesday with the aim to replace incumbent trainer Brazilian Paolo Bonamigo who took over only in the summer this year. Al Jazira won the UAE double in the 2010-11 season and took the President's Cup last year.
Magath was fired a month ago at Germany's top league Volkswagen- sponsored club VfL Wolfsburg after a miserable debut into the new 2012-13 season. Magath is famous and feared among football players for his ruthless training methods which brought him the nickname " Quaelix", which is a modification of the German verb to rack someone. His authoritarian style brought him a lot of admiration and criticism likewise.
As a player, Magath was famous in the early 1980s when he won the German championships with Hamburger SV three times. With the German national team, he won the European Championships in 1980 and was twice world runners-up in 1982 and 1986.
