LONDON, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Liverpool striker Fabio Borini could be sidelined for three months as the Italian international is to undergo foot surgery, said the Premiership team on Wednesday.

Borini sustained the injury in the Reds' 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United on September 23 and "aggravated the problem resulting in a fracture" when on international duty with Italy's Under-21 team ahead of their game against Sweden on Friday.

"Typically, an injury of this nature requires a three-month rehabilitation period," said the club in a statement posted on their website.

The 21-year-old Borini joined Liverpool from Roma in the summer and has scored just once in 11 appearances.
