RIO DE JANEIRO, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian midfielder Paulo Assuncao has joined Sao Paulo on a one-year deal after ending his contract with Atletico Madrid by mutual consent.
"I've experienced the best moments of my career at Atletico," Assuncao told his former club's official website on Saturday.
The 32-year-old's move follows eight seasons in Europe with Porto, AEK Athens and Atletico.
Despite helping the Spanish club to the 2010 and 2012 Europa League titles, Assuncao requested a transfer after managing just 10 games in all competitions last year.
"I hope they do very well this season and achieve their objectives. Now I'm really excited about returning to Brazil and hope I can repay the faith Sao Paulo has shown," he said.
Assuncao will be officially presented to the club's fans next week but he is not expected to play his first match until August.
