RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Traded from Gremio to Santos in the middle of the 2011 season, Borges was crowned the top scorer of the Brazilian Championship on Sunday.
Despite not playing in the 38th and final round of the tournament, the player led the scoring with 23 goals.
Due to his performance, he is likely to be named the most valuable player of this year's competition during the annual award ceremony to take place next week.
Borges becomes the ninth Santos player to win the scoring title, joining the ranks of legend Pele (1961, 1963 and 1964), Coutinho (1962), Toninho Guerreiro (1968), Serginho Chulapa (1983), Paulinho Mclaren (1991), Guga (1993), Viola (1998) and Kleber Pereira (2008).
Fluminense's Fred finished in a close second place with 22 goals, scoring 9 goals in the final four games of the tournament.
