MOSCOW, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Former Olympic weightlifting champion Vasily Alekseyev has died from heart problems, local media reported Friday.

The 69-year-old Alekseyev, who passed away in a clinic in Munich, Germany, won Olympic gold medals in 1972 and 1976 and eight world championships titles during his career.

He set 80 world records, including the total 645-kilogram mark across three lifts. That mark will stand as the event is no longer contested.
