RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- In the "classic" match between city rivals, host Sao Paulo and Palmeiras battled to a 1-1 tie in the 2011 Brazilian Championship on Sunday.
Dagoberto scored an amazing goal in the 42nd minute. In a demonstration of ball control and skill, the striker lofted the ball over the head of Palmeiras' keeper Marcos, bouncing it into the back of the goal and giving Sao Paulo the lead.
Palmeiras scored the equalizer in the 61st minute when Marcos Assuncao delivered a stopped ball to a wide-open Henrique who headed it past keeper Rogerio Ceni and into the upper left corner of the Sao Paulo goal.
The draw frustrated fans and both clubs as neither team was able to move up in the rankings. Sao Paulo remains in third place with 34 points while Palmeiras stays in sixth place with 29 points.
In the 19th and last round of the first half of the tournament, Sao Paulo will face another cross-town rival when they travel to play at Santos on August 28. On the same day, Palmeiras will receive rival and leader Corinthians.
