WARSAW, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Over 9,000 candidates from 71 countries and regions have applied for voluntary work during the 2012 European Championship in Ukraine and Poland, local media reported on Tuesday.

Euro 2012 volunteers are recruited both by championship-hosting cities and European soccer ruling body UEFA. UEFA volunteers will help out at stadiums, competitor accommodation centers and hotels, and those employed by cities will mainly work at so-called fan zones set up for off-stadium fans.

The recruitment will end in late September.

The championship, slated for June 8-July 1, 2012, will take place in four Polish cities of Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan as well as four Ukrainian cities of Kiev, Lvov, Donetsk and Kharkov.
