RIO DE JANEIRO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- At home against the leader of Group 2 in the Libertadores Cup, Gremio defeated Colombia's Junior de Barranquilla 2-0 on Thursday, ensuring its qualification into the round of 16 of the continental tournament.
Lucio scored Gremio's first goal in the 33rd minute, heading in a crossed ball from Borges who later scored his the second goal off a header in the 60th minute.
Head coach Renato Gaucho described the win as the club's best victory this season.
Gremio's win also marked the first loss of Junior de Barranquilla. Gremio will hope to claim the first place of the group with a win on the road against Bolovia's Oriente Petrolero on April 14.
The Brazilias will also hope for Junior de Baranquilla loss on the road against Leon de Huranuco in order to take the first place and carry the home-field advantage in the return leg of the next phase's games.
As of now, Gremio stands in second place with 10 points, trailing the Colombian's with 12 points.
