RIO DE JANEIRO, March 27 (Xinhua) -- In the showdown between rivals Vasco da Gama and Fluminense on Sunday, a mediocre performance by both teams led to a scoreless draw in the fifth round of the second half of the Rio de Janeiro state championship.
The result keeps Vasco da Gama in first place of Group B with 10 points. Second placed Boavista and third placed Americano also have 10 points but Vasco da Gama are leading the group with goal difference.
Fluminense dropped to third place in Group A with eight points, standing behind group leaders Olaria with 12 points and second placed Botafogo with 10 points. Only the top two teams in each group could advance to the playoffs phase.
Fluminense will return to action in the state championship on April 2 when they travel to face Volta Redonda. On the following day, Vasco da Gama will face Bangu at home. There are still three rounds to go before entering the semifinals of the second half of the tournament.
