KAMPALA, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda's David Dieudonne Habiyambere stormed the men's singles semifinals of the Uganda Open Tennis Championship Thursday after upstaging top seed Herbert Buyinza at the Lugogo Club in Kampala.
The lanky but steady Habiyambere started the game on a high note beating Buyinza 6-1 in the first set and struggling to take the next 6-4. The Rwanda player will now face third seed Allan Cooper from Kenya who saw off Jean Gasigwa 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
It was the game between little known David Oringa from Uganda and Kenya's Fred Ochieng that produced all the best ingredients for the game of the day.
Although it will be completed Friday because of the heavy rains Thursday, the two players had played for over three hours with Oringo leading 5-3 in the last deciding set.
Uganda's top player Duncan Mugabe who won the Kenya Open championship last week was in good form with a resounding 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rwanda's Oscar Nkunda. He will now wait to face the winner between Oringa and Kenya's Ochieng.
In the women's singles fourth seed Rehema Athumani beat Rose Kimanje 6-1, 6-1, while Annet Wambui was also too good for Veronica Nanyingi whom she defeated 6-4. 6-2. Uganda's Sarah Nanfuka humbled Kemigisha 6-0, 6-0 in the other game played.
