BIRMINGHAM, March 13 (Xinhua) -- The women's singles world No. 1 Wang Shixian from China defeated Japanese Eriko Hirose in straight sets, clinching her first title at All England Open Badminton Championships here on Sunday.
Wang, 21, started the opening game well by leading 17-12, but her tough opponent Hirose then took five points in a row. "I felt a little bit nervous after the tie in 17-17," said Wang, who climbed to the top of the world standings this year. "But then I tried my best to stay calm, then the match went well."
The Asian Games champion Wang edged Hirose 24-22 in the first game before took the second 21-18. ["It's a tough match," said Wang who sent off teammate Wang Xin in the semifinals on Saturday. "She has been a strong rival for long and is in good shape this time. I feel great to take the victory."
Wang was ousted form last year's All England in the first round.
