RIO DE JANEIRO, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo's goalkeeper Bruno apologized on the International Women's Day for his words discriminating against women after the team's 4-0 victory against Resende last Saturday.
"Who has never laid hands on their woman?" Bruno said when defending teammate Adriano after the striker slapped his fiancee in a funky party.
The defence looked good for Adriano but apparently annoyed the country's women.
"I was misinterpreted. I should have used different language in my statement. I ask forgiveness for what I said. I have daughters and I love them very much. Every women deserves affection," said Bruno on Monday.
After Saturday's victory over Resende, Adriano had a physical fight with his fiancee in front of some of his fellow teammates in a party.
His fiancee lost her mind and threw rocks at the player's car. In response, Adriano allegedly slapped her to the ground.
Bruno's comments then made the frontlines of almost every newspaper in the country.
