BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A spokesperson said Monday that the Chinese mainland "firmly opposes the words and actions" by the Taiwan administration after it interfered in the implementation of the "one country, two systems" in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR).
An Fengshan, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to a question concerning comments made by the Taiwan authorities regarding the qualification of some elected members of the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR.
An said the mainland is "highly concerned about" the irresponsible comments, the visit by the relevant members-elect to the island and their apparent collusion with those seeking "Taiwan independence."
According to An, since Hong Kong's return to the motherland, its government has fully and accurately implemented the "one country, two systems" principle and exercised a high degree of autonomy, with "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" in strict accordance with the country's Constitution and the Basic Law of the Hong Kong SAR.
The attempt by diehard "Taiwan and Hong Kong independence" elements to split the country goes against the consensus of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and is futile, An said.
