URUMQI, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese security official Meng Jianzhu has urged efforts to comprehensively improve China's anti-terrorism capabilities to safeguard stability and ensure the safety of life.
Meng, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, was in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for an anti-terrorism work meeting on Thursday.
Meng called for strengthening the construction of an anti-terrorism intelligence system and cracking down on the terror audio and video.
He urged to reinforce border and port control to avoid inter-connection and penetration of terrorists home and aborad.
Meng also called for efforts to root out religious extremism.
He urged to deepen international anti-terrorism cooperation to ensure China's state interests and the safety of overseas Chinese citizens and institutions.
China has its own concerns related to terrorism. An assault on a market in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on May 22 last year left more than 30 dead and injured 94, prompting a year-long campaign against terrorism.
