BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Yu Zhengsheng urged religious groups to make doctrine interpretations "in line with the requirements of social development".

Yu, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks Sunday at a meeting with representatives from various religious groups on behalf of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

Hailing the country's religious situation in 2014 as "harmonious", Yu praised various religious groups for safeguarding stability, promoting charitable work and supporting their communities.

Yu urged religious administrative organs to manage their affairs in accordance with the law while adapting to socialism, to actively stem illegal behavior and extremism.

Yu encouraged religious groups to continue to strive for closer ties with religious figures and followers, and to ensure their teams include individuals with religious leadership and research experience.

Yu also urged Party and government departments to improve their guidance of religious work; to strengthen relations with religious figures and communities; and to create a favorable environment for them.
