HARBIN, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong has called for greater technological innovation to rejuvenate traditional industrial bases in northeast provinces.

Northeastern industry rejuvenation has entered a "crucial stage," and technological innovation should be established as a main driver for future development, Liu said during a visit to Heilongjiang province on Sunday.

Liu urged more efforts be taken to make breakthroughs in core technology and boost key sectors as well as strategic emerging industries.

She called on local authorities to encourage cooperation among research institutes, universities and enterprises and improve services to innovative enterprises, especially to small and medium-sized companies.

She also asked for increased input in research and development and demanded more training of talented people.
