LOS ANGELES, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Actor Peter Falk, who played detective Lt. Columbo in the long-running television series " Columbo," has died at his Beverly Hills home, his family announced Friday. He was 83.
A family representative did not provide details regarding the cause of the well-known actor's death.
The New York City native received two Academy Award nominations for supporting roles in "Murder, Inc" (1960) and "Pocketful of Miracles" (1961) as he appeared in numerous films and television series in guest roles.
For his portrayal of the bumbling, trenchcoat-wearing detective, Falk won four Emmys in addition to one for a lead role in an episode of "The Dick Powell Theater." He also received eight other Emmy nominations and won a Golden Globe Award.
The actor was said to have suffered from dementia, as his health had been failing over the past several years.
