BEIJING, Feb. 10 --This year's Berlin International Film Festival will open with the premiere of a Chinese movie. Wang Quan'an's "Apart Together" tells the story of a soldier who left Shanghai for Taiwan in 1949, after the defeat of the Kuomintang rulers.

The opening night film "Apart Together", is one of two Chinese language films in the main competition. It highlights family struggles.

The movie is directed by Wang Quan'an, who won the Golden Bear in 2007 for "Tuya's Marriage." "Apart Together" follows the life of a soldier who left Shanghai in 1949 for Taiwan. After many decades, he returns to find his former love has long since married.

The plot explores their heart-breaking separation, their time apart, and eventually their reunion.

This year's Berlin film festival will feature other Chinese productions. They include Golden Bear winning director Zhang Yimou's "A Woman, A Gun And A Noodle Shop" and a new Jackie Chan kung-fu comedy.

The Berlin Film Festival will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year, with films focusing on the themes of family and reunions.
